OHIORAMP past System News and Updates info:
Most local ISP's have a page containing system upgrade notices, change notices, and some historical information about the ISP. Sometimes it's chock full of marketing gibberish, and sometimes it's just dry, technical notices about system status. For those interested in the behind the scenes story of our operations and procedures here at OHIORAMP, here is that page. Most folks will find this to be pretty dull stuff, but it's what us "geeks" do for a living!

Items are in reverse chronological order! That means the newest entries are at the top of this list. To get caught up with all the bulletins, scroll down to the bottom of the list and then read your way up to the present time.

April 2005: OHIORAMP technical Updates.
Major technical updates and server renumbering throughout the month of April. During this transition period, servers remianed powered and connected to the Internet, so websites were never down, but some sites had their IP information changed, so DNS or email resolving may have been intermittently interrupted on a few sites. This was resolved as the rest of the Internet caches incrementally updated their info.

Now, have fun and let the games begin!

December, 2001: OHIORAMP Adds more modems!
In addition to OHIORAMP's existing modem pools, we have acquired our fifth MAX Chassis modem server. Also, OHIORAMP has acquired two more multi-line Ascend Access servers (from a failed dot-com in a separate arrangement). This means OHIORAMP now has FIVE (yes, five!) MAX all-digital modem pools and two additional Ascend M801 mini-pools that are all digital and also capable of 56k / ISDN speeds. (As usual, these new digital modem pools are being extensively tested on lines that do not serve actual customers until they are verified as ready for "prime-time".) Once configured, the new modems will serve as redundant backup or expansion for the four MAX chassis servers currently in use. Currently, we have exceeded 99.9% uptime with the existing modem pools, but we continually add to our capacity and further increase our reliability.

December, 2001: OHIORAMP Upgrades Servers.
OHIORAMP now has over 60 server machines functioning in our datacenter. Distribution of all of these new disks will begin in about a month.

July, 2001: OHIORAMP Continues Server Upgrades.
OHIORAMP has upgraded a number of dedicated servers and account administration servers in our processor pool. May, 2001: OHIORAMP to add NNTP Newsfeeds.
Ohioramp originally operated in-house NNTP servers, then outsourced the task to Loral Cyberstar, based upon their plans to build an ultra high speed streaming news service using satellite technology. The satellite vendor failed to provide that service, so OHIORAMP has contracted for FULL ACCESS to NNTP servers on a single stream basis (Single stream means users may download as much NNTP as they want, one NNTP file at a time. This allows us to balance the load on the NNTP server for everyone's enjoyment). OHIORAMP users may set their news reader to single stream, then point to news.ohioramp.com for complete NNTP access.

This is the second year in a row we've achieved such high marks, and it brings our uptime ratio to over 99.5% since going live in 1998. What's more, our network has handled triple-digit growth for the second year -- adding new dial-up, web hosting, and colocation clients to our family of satisfied customers.

January, 2001: OHIORAMP Changes Billing System
For three years, we did billing by paper invoice and the US Mail. The recent postage increase, and the fact that we're primarily an electronic business, has convinced us to simplify billing procedures. Complete billing policies are in our TOS / Acceptable Usage Policy document, but summarized here as follows: 1) Now, all accounts renew on the first of the month, no matter when the user originally signed up. Thus everyone renews on the first of the month. (therefore, when your login password fails to work properly during the first week of a month, it's a sign your payment has not been received.) 2) we no longer mail monthly paper invoices, it's too costly and time consuming, and it kills too many trees. We encourage credit card billing and annual prepayment (which gets a discount!). See the Services page for current pricing and terms.

December, 2000: OHIORAMP Weathers the Storm.
On the night of December 11, 2000, Northeast Ohio was hit by a severe winter storm, causing blizzard conditions, damaging power and phone lines and closing the airport and local schools. But OHIORAMP service was uninterrupted. Even though power was out in the area, our backup systems saved the day. Our logs show no interruption to our webservers or access servers. In fact, as power was restored throughout the day, persons isolated at home or off from school logged into the network, causing a high spike in network usage. Through it all, OHIORAMP was open for business 24 X 7, with all websites responding and all operations normal.
At OHIORAMP, we sincerely hope you were not adversely affected by the storm, but if you were, we want you to know that good, reliable web hosting services are here and available for you.
